1388529 Epihalohydrin polymers B F GOODRICH CO 12 July 1973 [13 July 1972] 33269/73 Heading C3R Epihalohydrin polymers having weightaverage molecular weights of from 5000 to 300,000 are prepared by polymerizing epihalohydrins in a hydrocarbon medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising trialkylaluminium, water and an ether, the molecular weight of the polymers being controlled by conducting the polymerization at temperatures between 25 and 90‹ C. at a selected monomer-to-aluminium weight ratio of from 20 to 300 and with a selected concentration of from 10 to 98% of monomer by weight of the polymerization system. Examples describe the polymerization of epichlorohydrin and epibromohydrin using a tri-isobutyl-aluminium-water-diethyl ether catalyst.
