<p>1382775 Copolymer latex ARCO POLYMERS Inc 17 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 18543/73 Heading C3P A latex of a polymer formed from 1-10% unsaturated carboxylic acid and 90-99% comonomer is obtained by polymerizing all the acid monomer with 20-30% of the comonomer in the presence of 0-0À1% (based on total monomers), of an emulsifier, an initiator and sufficient water to give a latex of solids content 15-35% and polymerizing to 60-100% conversion, then adding a base to give a pH of 7-10 and the remaining comonomer and further initiator and polymerizing to obtain a latex of 30-65% solids. In the examples the acid is acrylic and/or itaconic, methacrylic or fumaric and the comonomer is butadiene,butadiene/ styrene, butadiene/methyl methacrylate, styrene, styrene/butyl acrylate or styrene/ 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. In one example dioctyl and dihexyl sodium sulphosuccinates are added as emulsifiers. Ammonium hydroxide is used as the base. The products are used to form films or coatings or to impregnate paper.</p> |
