1,243,893. Biocidal compositions containing thiocyanate and phenols. MERCK & CO. Inc. 20 Oct., 1969 [24 Oct., 1968], No. 51302/69. Heading A5E. A composition for inhibiting the growth of the microorganisms in aqueous systems comprises by weight:- (a) 3-20%, preferably 10-15%, of methylenebis(thiocyanate); (b) 5-20%, preferably 10-18%, of a chlorinated phenol or a sodium or potassium salt thereof; (c) 20-60%, preferably 30-50%, of a di(C 1-3 alkyl) formamide; (d) 20-60%, preferably 25-45%, of an alkylene glycol or an alkylene glycol mono (C 1-4 alkyl) ether and (e) 1-10%, preferably 1-5%, of a di(C 1-4 alkyl) aminomethylcycloalkanone having 4-8 ring carbon atoms. Suitable chlorinated phenols are 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol; suitable formamides are diethyl formamide, methylethyl formamide and dimethyl formamide; suitable glycols are ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethyleneglycol monomethyl ether and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether; and suitable dialkylaminomethylcycloalkanone are 2,6-bis-(diethylaminomethyl) cyclohexanone, 2,6-bis-(dimethylaminomethyl) cyclohexanone, 2,5-bis-(dimethylaminomethyl) cyclopentanone and 2,5-bis-(diethylaminomethyl) cyclopentanone. The composition finds application in the treatment of the white water in a paper mill. |
