1379116 Infra-red treatment of seeds D NEWTON 22 May 1973 [25 July 1972] 34804/ 72 Heading A2Q [Also in Division F4] Cereal grains, peas, beans and other seed are swollen and ruptured by placing them on an openwork metal conveyor 3, and passing them beneath an infra-red heater 5, having a wave-length of 1.8-6 microns. The seeds may be barley, wheat, maize, Milo oats or soyabeans. They may be coarsely ground before treatment. In Fig. 1, seeds from feed hopper I are fed via variable-speed vibrator 2 to variable-speed, vibrating conveyor 3. The conveyor is of wedge-woven steel wire. Its speed may be increased automatically in response to increase in temperature of the seeds. Infra-red heaters 5 are ceramic tiles heated by a compressed air/propane mixture. The heated seed are passed through roller mill 12 and fluid bed cooler 15 before emerging on conveyor 16. Surplus steam and fine material pass from the fluid bed cooler to cyclone 20 where they are separated. |
