The lightweight filing cabinet chassis is made from steel plate and comprises a rectangular shaped support structure without either upper or lower walls. Enlarged sections are formed at the top and bottom of the chassis for receiving reinforcing steel support plates to ensure horizontal rigidity. The side walls have vertical channels formed in order to give the assembly a vertical rigidity. Small holes are drilled in the walls for locating shelf support dowels at various heights inside the cabinet. A blank section on the front walls permits the insertion of either a glass window or double opening doors.
