1343216 Substituted polyalkamers MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 14 Oct 1971 [17 Oct 1970] 47940/71 Heading C3P Substituted polyalkamers comprising repeating units of formula-CHCl.CHOR(CHR1) 2 - where R represents the acyl residue of a C 1-13 organic monobasic acid having a dissociation constant in water at 25‹ C. of at least 1À65 x 10-5, R1 represents hydrogen some but not all of which may be replaced by methyl and z is 3 to 10, the ratio of CHR1 to CHCl and CHOR groups is 1À5 : 1 to 5 : 1, may be prepared by reacting a polyalkenamer dissolved in methylene chloride, optionally together with methanol or benzene, with an alkyl hypochlorite in the presence of said monobasic acid. The polyalkenamer may be prepared by ring opening polymerization of one or more cycloolefins in the presence of a tungsten compound. The preferred alkyl hypochlorite is t-butyl hypochlorite. Many suitable acids are specified and examples describe the reaction of polypentenamer with (1 and 2) acetic acid, (3 and 4) formic acid, (5) p-toluenesulphonic acid, (6) trichloracetic acid, (7) trifluoracetic acid, (8) perfluorobutyric acid and (9) perfluorooctanoic acid; polyoctenamer with (10) formic acid, (11) acetic acid (12) trichloracetic acid and (13) perfluorobutyric acid; polydodecenamer with (14) acetic acid, (15) trichloracetic acid and (16) perfluorobutyric acid; poly(3 - methyloctenamer) with acetic acid; and poly(pentenamer) co(octenamer) with trichloracetic acid; in the presence of t-butyl hypochlorite. The products may be used in paints and coating compositions, for waterproofing textiles and may be saponified to give cross-linkable hydroxyl-containing materials.
