1415984 Electrolytic cell for production of alkali metal chlorate and hypochlorite DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 25 Jan 1973 [26 Jan 1972] 3784/73 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell for the electrolysis of brine comprises a stack of alternate, spaced, horizontal, foraminous anodes and cathodes; electrolyte being supplied to the electrode assembly from below and rising through the stack of electrodes through the action of gas formed by the electrolytic action. The apparatus may comprise a single unitary cell, or as shown, a sequence of cells 35-39 may be provided, having bi-polar electrodes 46 extending through the partitions dividing the cells, the electrodes 46 being cathodic in the left-hand cell as shown, and anodic in the right-hand cell. The electrode compartments may be separated by a partition 32 from a compartment containing a coil for effecting temperature control of the electrolyte; the partition 32 having apertures 41 and open portions 42 whereby electrolyte circulates upwards through the electrode compartment and downwards through temperature control compartment. The cell may be formed of plastics material, e.g. PVC; the anodes may comprise a metal substrate, e.g. of valve metal, having a coating of valve metal oxide and platinum metal oxide, e.g. expanded Ti mesh coated with TiO 2 and RuO 2 and may . include tin oxide or a cobalt compound, e.g. cobalt titanate. The cathode may be of steel, stainless steel, Ni, Pb, Pt or Ti. The cell may be used in the production of alkali metal chlorate; or of alkali metal hypochlorite. In production of the hypochlorite conductivity of the electrolyte may be improved by the addition of chromium or vanadium, e.g. by use of appropriately arranged sacrificial anodes, or by addition of sodium chromate or vanadate. |
