Ion exchange to remove protein from effluent water - using a cellulose based ion exchange medium

A method is described for ion exchange between an ion exchange medium containing cellulose material and a liquid containing protein. the two phases are stirred together and then separated. The medium is stirred with a regenerating agent and these are separated. The medium is stirred with a wash liquid and separated before regenerations are done in >=1 vessel with a filter and a stirrer above the filter. The separation is driven by air pressure difference across the filter. Used to lower protein from liquids produced by food and drink industry. Especially to treat whey. The liquid is purified for disposal or reuse. Only one vessel is used for all the operations.
