The inner member has notches 17 in an annular side wall 16. Matching notches 20 are provided in the outer member and these notches are bounded by a spacer ring 24. The notches may be in the form of a triangle, a trapezium, a segment of a circle or a combination of these such that the ratio of the length of the welted edge of the aperture to the diameter of a circle which can be inscribed in the aperture remains substantially constant at a ratio not exceeding 6 : 1 between the just-open (engine idling) and one third fully open conditions of the valve.
