A process for the preparation of graft copolymer which comprises graft-copolymerizing at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer (C) to a substratum polymer (AB) having pendant double bond, said substratum polymer (AB) being prepared from at least one comonomer (A) expressed by the following general formula WHEREIN X is -OH, -O-CH2-CH2-OH, -O-CH2-CH(CH3)-OH, -O-CH(CH3)-CH2-OH, -O-CH2-CH2-NH2 or -NH2, and at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer (B).
