<p>Glass melting furnace for continuous operation, contng. a melting zone, refining zone and a conditioning zone, contains a transverse horizontal barrier extending at least partly across the furnace, the barrier being liq. cooled and located in the upper zone of the melt for controlling the flow of glass into the conditioning zone. A transverse row of two or more stirrers with vertical driven shafts is located near the barrier for stirring the forward moving stream. The barrier is pref. located at or near a constriction in the furnace between the refining and conditioning zones. The stirrers can rotate in the same or opposite directions, and the barrier is pref. adjustable w.r.t. its vertical position in the melt. Ensures a homogeneous melt thereby removing optical defects due to inhomogeneity in the glass being made.</p> |
