The sheet material (2), such as aluminium foil or polythene, is rolled onto a cardboard tube provided with protective end plates (3, 3') which have central projections which locate in the tube. The central projection has two diameters, one allowing the roll to abut against the plates for protection and the other, smaller, diameter, allowing the roll to rotate w.r.t. the plates when placed in a dispenser. The dispenser is essentially rectangular and has a locating slot at each end (11) for the end plates of the roll, these being joined together by a front face (12) provided with a serrated edge (17) tearing off pieces of material. The ends also have brackets (10) with slotted holes (16) so that the dispenser can be fixed to a wall, for example.
