Metal coated steel strip with improved surface structure is made by applying >=1 metal coating layer to the steel by standard electrolytic means. The last applied coating layer is then fused while holding the concn. of O2 in the atmos. in the vicinity of the strip lower than that in the surrounding air by a factor of >=7, at least in the range in which the coating is raised by 20 degrees C to its m.pt. Effecting of the fusion stage in a O2 atmos. gives coated (esp. tinned) steel strip having an even glossy surface free from 'wood grain' effects. The coating also have improved corrosion resistance, e.g. the Iron Solubility Value (I.S.V. cf. "Corrosion", Vol. 12, No. 9, 1956, pages 440-443) is reduced by 30-40%.
|
