The machine automatically fills upright barrels, having a barrel conveyor, a cover opening mechanism, a weighing scales, a filler unit and positioning and cover closing mechanisms. To centre the barrels on the conveyor a mechanism (2) is provided, having a horizontal friction wheel driven in two stages, opposite which two pressure rollers are extensible in the horizontal direction. Below this mechanism is a slewing mechanism (3), with rollers which can be raised above the conveyor (1), while a bunghole positioning device on a frame above the conveyor slides down onto the barrel top. This device has an initiator positioned on the path followed by the bunghole as the barrel is slewed, and a second one on that followed by the vent hole, also an extensivle stop switch. Centring, slewing and bunghole positioning mechanisms are interlocked via a control unit.
