According to some embodiments, a medical instrument (for example, an ablation device) comprises an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end, an energy delivery member positioned at the distal end of the elongate body, a first plurality of temperature-measurement devices carried by or positioned within the energy delivery member, the first plurality of temperature-measurement devices being thermally insulated from the energy delivery member, and a second plurality of temperature-measurement devices positioned proximal to a proximal end of the energy delivery member, the second plurality of temperature-measurement devices being thermally insulated from the energy delivery member.

1. A medical instrument comprising:
an elongate body comprising a proximal end and a distal end; a combination electrode assembly comprising a tip electrode portion positioned at the distal end of the elongate body and a proximal ring electrode portion spaced apart from the tip electrode portion by an electrically-insulating gap; a first plurality of thermocouples positioned along the tip electrode portion, wherein the first plurality of thermocouples are thermally insulated from the tip electrode portion; and a second plurality of thermocouples positioned along the proximal ring electrode portion, wherein the combination electrode assembly is configured to contact tissue and to deliver energy sufficient to generate a lesion at a depth from a surface of the tissue, and wherein temperature measurements determined from the first plurality of thermocouples and the second plurality of thermocouples are indicative of temperature of the tissue.
