(N)-propynyl-(2)-phenoxy-alkanoamides - for use as total herbicides

New N-propynyl-2-phenoxy-alkanoamides are of formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are halogen or 1-4c alkyl; R3 is 1-4C alkyl; R4 and R5 are H or 1-3C alkyl). (I) are total herbicides for pre- or post-emergence control of broad-leaved and grassy weeds. A typical cpd. is N-(1,1-dimethylpropargyl)-2-(3,5-dichlorophenoxy)butyramide. In an example, this is prepd. from 2-(3,5-dichlorophenoxy)butyryl chloride and 3-methyl-3-amino-1-butyne.
