The present invention provides in the welding of a pipe seam between adjacent edges of at least one band using pipe welding machinery having a tracer head the improvement comprising a set up including a guide groove in said band extending parallel to the band edge and located in the fusion zone of the welding seam; said groove being adapted to accomodate the tracer head so as to automatically guide welding heads in said machinery.
