An electrical resistance furnace installation, especially for the production of silicon carbide, the current being supplied by means of electrodes through a horizontal resistance core in a reacting burden, to bottom electrodes, conducting elements supporting the resistance core above the electrodes, and no side walls or end walls. The reacting burden is poured onto the furnace floor to surround the resistance core.
