A knuckle type coupler in which the knuckle has a nose contour designed to satisfy a formula derived to maximize the tendency for an open knuckle to remain open during the gathering phase of the coupling operation regardless of the coupler shank pivot constraint conditions. A particularly effective coupler has its nose contour developed by a 6 inch radius struck from 11/2 inches forward of its pivot pin center, in combination with a 7/8 inch radius which joins the standard knuckle contour at the pulling surface. |
