In the separation of a gas e.g. isotope, mixture using a swirl tube 10, the gas mixture is collected under positive pressure at 36, 37 and fed into the swirl tube 10 so as to flow from one end to another along a helical path, the gas being caused to expand as it is fed into the swirl tube in the direction of flow, e.g. by means of a nozzle 21 which is divergent in the direction of flow. The flow velocity in the swirl tube is higher than in conventional swirl tubes and can be increased further by rotating the swirl tube in the direction of flow thereby avoiding friction losses. <IMAGE> |
