A process is provided for preparing composition of a polyphenylene ether resin and a vinyl addition polymer component, said process comprising polymerizing a corresponding vinyl monomer in a solvent capable of dissolving the polyphenylene other resin and said vinyl monomer and thereafter adding to the liquid polymerization mixture, a phenol capable of oxidatively coupling to form said polyphenylene ether resin and a catalytic amount of a catalyst to effect oxidative coupling of said phenol, polymerizing said phenol in the presence of oxygen and thereafter recovering the composition of the vinyl addition polymer and polyphenylene ether resin from the reaction mixture.
