The system permits a herniplegic to propel a wheelchair using only one hand. The mechanism can be fitted to the right or left wheel without any modification. It comprises two ratchet wheels mounted on the same shaft. A clutch has a pin which can engage the teeth of the right or left hand wheel to move the chair forwards or backwards respectively. The control is operated by a pivoted lever at the front of the chair. Turning the lever alters the direction of travel and a simple back and forward oscillation propels the chair. |
