A vessel for the pasteurisation of sewage sludge is a slender vertical cylinder with an inlet on top and an outlet at the bottom. A worm, driven by a motor, has several helical ribs which divide the annulus between worm shaft and cylinder wall into several individual spiral passages.- This eliminates both the risk of infection of the container and of any re-infection of already pasteurised sludge by sucked-in contaminated air
