<p>A method of producing a 12-dihydro steroid, particularly a 3,7-disubstituted-12-dihydro steroid such as 3.alpha.,7.alpha.-dihydroxy-5.beta.-cholanic acid, by subjecting a 12-hydroxy steroid to the action of a 12-dehydroxylase producing microorganism in a suitable medium The 12-hydroxy steroid may be subjected to the action of the microorganism itself or a 12-dehydroxylase enzyme produced by the microorganism. The microorganism is preferably one from the group of Clostridium and Bifidobacterium, especially Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium welchii. The 12-dihydro steroids have desirable pharmacological properties such as hypolipidemic activity.</p> |
