There is disclosed a process for the manufacture of partially halogenated leuco-1,4,5,8- tetrahydroxyanthraquinone from aqueous solutions containing anthraquinone sulphonic acid mixtures, e.g. as obtained from the waste liquors which arise from the disulphonation of anthraquinone, during the manufacture of 1,5 and 1,8-anthraquinone disulphonic acids. The process involves successive steps of halogenation, dinitration, reduction, hydrolysis and reduction. The resulting leuco-1,4,5,8- tetrahydroxyanthraquinones may be used as intermediates for the manufacture of anthraquinone dyes.
