ADENINE DERIVATIVES

Functionalized adenine derivatives are prepared by reacting a compound which contains an adenine nucleus which has been halogen substituted in the 8-position, with a compound having the general formula M+-S-(CH2)n-COO-M+ wherein M+ is the ion of an alkali metal and n is an integer, the reaction being carried out in a polar aprotic solvent. These functionalized adenine derivative are useful in preparing macromolecularized adenine compounds which find application in affinity chromatography and enzymic reactions, by reaction with polymers which have at least one primary or secondary aminic group in their structure. Adenine derivatives of the invention include 8-(2-carboxyethyl-thio)adenosine, nicotinoylamide-8- (2-carboxyethylthio)adenine dinucleotide and nicotinoylamide-8- (2-carboxyethylthio)adenine dinucleotide phosphate.
