PURPOSE:To manufacture caustic alkali of high concentration at a low voltage, by use of fluorine-contg. ion exchange membrane, on both sides of which anode and cathode are closely fixed respectively, as a diaphragm for electrolyzing alkali chloride. CONSTITUTION:As a diaphragm for the electrolysis of alkali chloride is used a cation exchange membrane, which is composed of a copolymer of fluorinated olefin and polymerizing fluorine-contg. monomer including carboxylic acid group, the content of the carboxylic acid group per 1g dry resin and per 1g water contained in the resin being respectively 0.9-2.0mm equivalent and 8-28mm equivalent, and porous anode and cathode made of graphite and platinum are fixed closely on each side respectively. Pref., average pore diameter, porosity, and air permeability coefficient are 0.01-2.0mu, 30-80%, and 1X10<-5>-1X10<-1>mol/cm<2>.min.cm Hg respectively for anode, and 0.1-10mu, 35-75%, and 1X10<-4>-1X10<-2>mol/cm<2>. min.cm Hg respectively for cathode. |
