Crude chlorine gas containing O2,H2, and CO2 gas was purified, without being liquified, dried or absorbed by a solvent, by cooling the raw gas in the presence of H2O in order to form a cryst. Cl hydrate. Other components were removed and the hydrate crystals decompd. to recover the Cl2 gas. The gas was cooled according to the formula log P >= 16.043-(3726/T), T is 270-310oK.
