NEW MATERIAL:Water-soluble compounds of formula I, wherein R1, R2 are lower (sulfo)alkyl; at least one of R1, R2 is always sulfoalkyl; R3 is H, lower alkyl; X is cyano, alkoxy carbonyl, substd. or unsubstituted benzoyl. USE:Light absorbing dye for silver halide photographic material and having excellent decolorizing properties and durable stability in an aq. soln. PREPARATION:An active methylene compd. of formula X and a benzaldehyde derivative of formula III are heated in a polar solvent such as methanol or N,N- dimethylformamide, if necessary, with the addition of a base such as triethylamine, or piperidine. The compounds of formula X can be produced by reacting a benzoic ester derivative with acetonitrile. The compounds of formula III is obtained by boiling a halogenated alkylaminobenzaldehyde derivative in an aq. soln. of sodium sulfite. |
