A latch assembly(1) comprises a bolt unit(3) mounted in a frame member of a door or window sash, and 1st. & 2nd. bolt driving units(13, 24) installed one on each side of the door or window sash. The bolt unit has a latch bolt(8) supported by a rotatable hollow shaft. The 1st. bolt-driving unit(13) includes a 1st. driver torque bar(14) having one end spring-biased for insertion into and for driving engagement with the hollow shaft. The 2nd. bolt-driving unit(24) includes a 2nd. driver torque bar(25) having one end spring-biased for withdrawal out of driving engagement with the hollow shaft.
