Sodium or potassium hydroxide is reacted with a compound which contains an alcoholic hydroxyl group but does not contain other groups which react with strong bases and calcium oxide in the presence of a suitable surface active agent. The surface active agent is preferably cationic, nonionic or amphoteric containing cationic groupings. The surface active agent causes the reaction to proceed much more rapidly and the formed alkoxide remains in solution with calcium hydroxide being formed as a precipitate which can be easily separated from the solution. |
