The object of this invention is to provide a process for treating a sour petroleum distillate with mercaptan. A method of treating a sour petroleum distillate with mercaptan which comprises contacting said distillate with week base-anionic exchange resin and treating the distillate in an alkaline solution (pH 9-14) in contact with an oxidizing agent and a metal phthalocyanine catalyst.
