PURPOSE:To detect with higher accuracy the shape, bend, distortion and so on of a material under test by a method wherein variations of inclined angles of a probe are detected by simultaneously computing the time required for beams to travel to the surface of a rectangular material after ultrasonic waves are transmitted. CONSTITUTION:Ultrasonic beams are so arragned that they are incident upon a material 6 via their propagation through a medium 5. The beams reflected by the surface of the material 6 return to a probe 1, so that they may be detected by a receiving unit 12. When the beams are transmitted and received is computed by a time computing circuit 13 so that the distance where the beams have travelled from the probe 1 to the material 6 is detected. In addition, the inclined angle of the probe is detected in an inclined angle detecting unit 14. Based on the signal from the inclined angle detecting unit and the signal for the distance of the beam described above, an arithmetic circuit 15 makes computations in order to detect the position of the surface of the material 6 under the test. As a result, variations of shapes of the material can be detected with higher accuracy. |
