PURPOSE:To obtain cooling effect as well as lubrication in a captioned shaft sealing device by providing an axially-extended projection on the inside of a back-up ring equipped in the shaft sealing part of a propeller shaft to partition an annular chamber for constantly circulating oil in the shaft sealing device. CONSTITUTION:When a propeller shaft 1 is rotated, in accordance with the relative rotation to an intermediate ring 14 in an annular chamber 8 between both seal rings 4 and 5, circulating oil is made to flow in the rotational direction of the propeller shaft 1 by the viscous resistance to a sliding face 12 of a sleeve liner 2. As it is given a positive pressure in the front side of a projection 20 and a negative pressure in the rear side, a pressure difference is generated between a discharge port 28 and a suction port 29 for making a pumping work. The circulating oil is circulated in the circulating route 31 connecting both ports 28 and 29 together as an arrow shows, and lubrication and cooling effect is exhibited in the seal rings 4 and 5.
