PURPOSE:To perform titled detection without contacting with materials to be welded by moving an electrode wire on a weld line while allowing the leading end of said wire to make circular motion and processing the relations between the distance from a top to the materials to be welded or between the change in said distance and the rotating angle of the wire. CONSTITUTION:The leading end of a tip 6 is rotated with a point P as a fulcrum to draw a locus 6'. In this time, the rotating angle omega of the tip 6 is detected with a detector for rotating angle. While the leading end of the tip 6 is moved to make circular motion, the tip is moved on the weld line and the distance between the tip 6 and materials 3 to be welded or the change in said distance is determined from the instantaneous value or change rate of >=1 among welding conditions such as the welding current and welding voltage at each position (rotating angle omega) of the circle and the feed speed of an electrode wire 2. The above-mentioned relations between the distance or the change in distance and the rotating angle omega are processed, and the inclination alpha of the wire 2 with respect to the weld line, the inclination of the wire 2 with respect to the materials 3 and the deviation of the wire 2 from the weld line, etc. are determined, whereby the above-mentioned distance is detected. |
