The rail vehicle driving system comprises a bogie(14,16) supporting the body(12) and having lengthwise members(50,52) with reinforcing arms(54,56,58,60) therebetween. Its two axles(42,46) are gear-driven, the 1st one supporting a change-speed gearbox(46) mounted between it & the 2nd one. A propulsion unit comprising engine(24), torque converter(28) & transmission system(32) is mounted in the vehicle body & coupled by a shaft(37) to the gearbox. The gearbox(47) in turn is coupled to the 1st axle, & by a propeller shaft to the 2nd axle passing under the reinforcing arms.
