PURPOSE:To reform a hydrocarbon to an inorganic gas consisting essentially of gaseous carbon dioxide without reducing the catalytic activity, by mixing the hydrocarbon with water or air, and passing the resultant mixture through a reforming catalyst, consisting of a heat-resistant inoragnic material, and having a specific shape. CONSTITUTION:A heating reaction tube 7 is preheated by a heater 9 to a given temperature, and the supply of a hydrocarbon gas is started from a pipe 3 for supplying the hydrocarbon. On the other hand, water or air is supplied from a supply pipe 5 to a path 4, and the hydrocarbon gas, steam and air are passed through inoragnic heat-resistant fibers 6, e.g. quartz wool, mixed, fed to a reforming catalyst 8, consisting of a heat-resistant inorganic material, e.g. gamma-alumina or cordierite, supporting an oxidation catalyst, and having a cross section consisting of honeycombed or lattice-like multilayered thin walls in which plural cylindrical catalytic materials are arranged in series closely side by side and the size of the small holes surrounded by the thin walls is reduced in the flow direction of the fuel gas current one after another, and reformed to give an inorganic gas consisting essentially of hydrogen and gaseous carbon dioxide. |
