A method for the preparation of a novel keto lactone represented by the formula (II), (II) which comprises oxidizing a hydroxy lactone represented by the formula (III), (III) with chromic acid. The novel compounds of formula (II) are useful in the preparation of lineatin which is an insect attractant compound used in agriculture and forestry for controlling insect pest populations.
