A number of sonars (10) located at a distance from one another effect a vertical movement (A) in the water. During this movement, or when the movement is interrupted, the sonars pick up transmitted signals from the underwater object or signals (40) reflected from it. The sonars transmit data to a central process unit based on the picked-up signals, and this after detection processing and analysis. A cheap and highly effective microprocessor is used which permits a fixed Fourier transformation analysis of the different signals where identification is required to take place immediately in the detector equipment.
