The invention relates to a device for heating the surface of camshafts or cam followers by means of an arc torch along a track. An arc torch is mounted at a variable distance from the camshaft. The latter is displaceable by a servomotor. A controller acts on the servomotor in order to maintain a constant distance between the arc burner and the surface of the camshaft to be heated. The constancy of the arc voltage serves as control variable for the maintaining of the distance. The arc current is held constant.
