In addition to its main heater (12) of normal power, which is controlled manually by a power control element (17), an electrical hotplate (11) has an additional heater (13), which is connected in parallel with the main heater (12) and in series with a temperature switch (15) and with an additional contact which is operated by the adjusting shaft (21) of the power control element (17) in an upper or medium power range of the hotplate (11). The temperature switch is a temperature limiter which operates with a relatively large amount of inertia and has a large amount of switching hysteresis, which in this case is used as a timer which normally no longer switches on once it has been switched off.
