Apparatus forms a liquid-tight container having a rectangular cross- section from a one-piece, T-shaped blank (100) of paperboard. The apparatus automatically bonds a polythene panel and straw 220 to the carton blank on a rotating vacuum-hold heat-sealing and alignment drum (146). A conveyor collates carton blanks with four side-by- side forming mandrels (only one of which is shown at 304 in Figure 26). An ultrasonic welder bonds the side seams and end closure panels of each of four containers on side-by-side rotating crossbar mandrels (400) which eliminate any misalignment during the sealing process. A conveyor then carries the carton blanks through pre-form (see Figure 51a), two-stage filler, and end- closure work stations, including anvils for ultrasonic welding. An ejector mechanism ejects the filled carton blanks from the rigid conveyor along a dual direction path, thereby eliminating the possibility of creasing or puncturing the filled and sealed container. The apparatus accommodates the production of differing size containers with five adjustments. <IMAGE> |
