Artificial red cells comprising microdroplets of aqueous, stroma-free hemoglobin solution encapsulated in membranes of polymerized hemoglobin permeable to oxygen and impermeable to hemoglobin formed by a process comprising forming microdroplets of hemoglobin solution in a continuous oil phase to form an emulsion of hemoglobin in oil and suspending globules of the so-formed emulsion in an aqueous suspending phase which contains a hemoglobin crosslinking agent which is at least bifunctional.
