The automatic adjuster(6) includes a pawl and ratchet nut mechanism(8, 18) and a bimetallic strip(19) arranged to disengage the pawl from the ratchet nut when a predetermined temperature is attained. Upon excessive travel of the pawl, the strip permits reengagement of the pawl with the ratchet to permit adjustment. The bimetallic strip is pivoted to an arm(17) of a pawl lever(11). Upon heating, the strip bends until it contacts the ratchet teeth and by reaction urges the pawl clear of the teeth.
