Secondary alkylresorcinols are prepared by treating resorcinol with a secondary aliphatic alcohol or secondary alkyl halide having at least seven carbon atoms. The reaction is preferably effected at a raised temperature in the presence of a cationoid catalyst, and when an alcohol is used the water formed in the reaction is continuously removed. The secondary alkyl group attaches itself to the resorcinol nucleus either through the carbon atom to which the hydroxy group of the secondary alcohol (or the halogen atom of the secondary alkyl halide) was attached, or through an adjacent carbon atom other than a terminal carbon atom. In the examples: (1) resorcinol and n-octane-2-ol in the presence of zinc chloride yield 4-(n-octyl-3<1>)-resorcinol; (2) resorcinol and 2 - bromo - n - heptane in the presence of zinc chloride yield 4-(n-heptyl-3<1>)-resorcinol. Secondary nonylresorcinols are stated to be obtainable. Specification 398,218 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the products are useful as germicides and antiseptics and may be incorporated in solutions, jellies or lozenges in a proportion of 0,5 per cent or more. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
