PURPOSE:To obtain the wavelength characteristic without MR element width loss and gap loss, by constituting the MR element in a closed magnetic path. CONSTITUTION:A notch groove 2 is provided at a surface of an insulating magnetic substrate 1 so as to fill in a nonmagnetic member 3, grating ruggedness having a prescribed period is provided, and its direction is tilted to the direction of current of the MR element 5. An Ni-Fe alloy is vapor-deposited on it via an insulating layer, electrodes 6, 7 are arranged at both ends of the MR element in the lengthwise direction by etching, and the MR element is provided in parallel with the lengthwise direction of the notch groove 2. The upper end of the MR element 5 is coupled magnetically with the end of the notch groove 2, the lower end is insulated electrically from the upper end of a permeability thin film 8 via an insulating layer and coupled magnetically. The lower end of the permeability thin film 8 is brought into contact with the surface of the 2-layer structure vertical recording medium having the vertical magnetization medium 12 made of Co-Cr or the like on the permeability thin film 11 made of Ni-Fe alloy provided on a base member 10, the medium is carried in the arrowed direction 13 and the vertical magnetization signal is reproduced. As a result, the anisotropic magnetic field where the easy magnetization direction of the MR element 5 is tilted to the current direction of the said element and held. |
