In the separating device, the pile of sheets (5) bears spring pressure from below against a stop (4b, 4c) which is rigidly connected to the machine, and two feeding rollers (7) which can be swivelled onto the top sheet of the pile are arranged on a common shaft (8) at some distance from each other. The two feeding rollers (7) are swivelled by means of a reciprocating driving element (10), which is preferably driven by a rotating cam disc (17). To permit setting of the separating device to various paper thicknesses and to ensure that sheets are not drawn in at an angle, an individually settable adjusting element (11) is connected into the swivelling mechanism of each of the two feeding rollers (7), so that the initial positions of the two feeding rollers can be altered. <IMAGE>
