The invention relates to a calling or intercom system which consists of a limited number of "n" individual units and for each individual unit the transmitter has a separate call key using which a code signal is generated with which an individual unit programmed to this code can be selectively called. In order to be able to operate the system with more than "n" individual units, where each individual unit however has only "n" call keys, it is proposed that the call keys be combined with one another and that the call keys combined with one another be pressed simultaneously so that, for example, through the simultaneous pressing of two call keys, two parallel input code signals are generated, which, when combined, form a further serial code signal with which a further individual unit programmed to the code signal can be called. By pressing all the call keys in pairs, the system can be extended by (n(n-1))/2 individual units.
