A method and a device are proposed for carrying out the method of checking the serviceability of an oxygen probe which is sensitive to the oxygen component of a gas mixture and is fitted in the intake-air or exhaust-gas line of an internal combustion engine, together with the control device (12) connected to it. For this purpose, the output variable of the oxygen probe is checked for its amplitude and frequency or cycle time by a diagnostic device (10). Comparison of these measured values with limit values obtained in tests enables the serviceability of the oxygen probe to be reliably assessed without it having to be removed from the respective automotive vehicle. Incorporation of the diagnostic device (10) in the control unit itself and automation of the measurement operation is also proposed. The serviceability of the oxygen probe can then be determined by checking the output signal and, if necessary, the driver can be informed via visual or acoustic information units or internal work can be carried out on the regulating circuit. <IMAGE>
