A bin (15) has an open-ended vertical column (25), whose bottom (30) is spaced from the bottom (18) of the bin (15) mounted therein. A pneumatic conveying system (8) supplies material to be blended from a source (5, Fig. 1) to the material inlet (17) in the bottom of the bin (15) and conveys the material upwardly through the column (25) to discharge it from the top thereof over the top surface of material already in the bin (15), with the aid of a defector (35). Material already in the bin (15) is drawn into the bottom of the column (25) and so is blended with material being conveyed to the bin (15). Booster gas can be supplied to the bin (15) through a gas permeable surface (50) adjacent the bottom of the column (25), by using a vacuum applied through a vent (19) or by a blower (55, Fig. 1) supplying gas directly through conduit (52) to a manifold (51) surrounding the surface (50). The outlet for blended material (40) is coextensive with the inlet (17) of the bin (15). The material may be recirculated internally by supplying only gas through the inlet (17). <IMAGE> |
